What Is BLACK Rhythm & Blues?

BLACK Rhythm & Blues is a prevention-focused maternal heart health education initiative designed to reduce preventable postpartum cardiovascular complications. We center Black maternal health equity by supporting families with education, practical tools, and community-based pathways to care.

  • Focus: postpartum heart health and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy

  • Timeline: prenatal through 12 months postpartum

  • Approach: education, early detection, and community support

Blood Pressure Check

Early Detection & Screening

Community-based screenings and education that reinforce early recognition of risk factors and warning signs.

Hypertensive Disorders Education

Practical education on preeclampsia, postpartum hypertension, and when symptoms require urgent medical attention.

Postpartum Cardiomyopathy Awareness

Awareness-building around postpartum cardiomyopathy and other cardiac warning signs that can be missed or minimized.

Referral & Care Navigation

Support connecting families to primary care and cardiology, including encouragement for postpartum follow-up.

Know the Warning Signs

If you are pregnant or postpartum and experience concerning symptoms, trust your instincts and seek medical care. This page provides general education and does not replace medical advice.

Warning Sign List:

  • Severe or persistent headache

  • Vision changes (blurred vision, seeing spots)

  • Chest pain, chest pressure, or shortness of breath

  • Swelling of the face/hands that feels sudden or severe

  • Rapid weight gain in a short period of time

  • Heart racing, dizziness, fainting, or extreme fatigue

  • Upper right abdominal pain or nausea/vomiting that feels unusual

 

If you think you are having a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

We collaborate with community partners, healthcare providers, and managed care organizations committed to maternal mortality prevention and postpartum care improvement.
 
Partnership Options:

  • Sponsor monitoring kits and education tools

  • Support community workshops or screening events

  • Provide in-kind resources or outreach support

  • Collaborate on referral pathways and follow-up reinforcement


All supplies and support are dependent on available funding and donated inventory. We will confirm available resources upon intake.
