We’re Still Dying to Feed Our Babies: Redefining Allyship in Human Lactation Equity for Marginalized Populations

We’re Still Dying to Feed Our Babies examines the intersection of racism, bias, policy, and professional practice within lactation and maternal-infant health care. This session challenges participants to critically examine how allyship is defined, practiced, and sometimes misapplied within healthcare spaces. Drawing from public health data, lived experiences, and professional practice, participants will explore how well-intentioned systems can perpetuate harm when equity is not operationalized.

Through Their Eyes: Perceptions of Bias and Health-Seeking Behaviors in Lactation Care

Through Their Eyes centers lived experiences alongside research and professional practice to examine how bias—both individual and institutional—impacts health-seeking behaviors. Participants will critically explore how “everyday realities,” including employment constraints, cultural traditions, family dynamics, and historical mistrust of institutions, intersect with lactation support. The session emphasizes normalization of real-life challenges while equipping participants with equity-driven, culturally humble strategies to improve engagement and care delivery.

Bias at the Bedside: Microaggressions, Power, and Lactation Care: This workshop explores how everyday interactions, language, and assumptions shape lactation experiences for marginalized families. Participants examine how power dynamics and microaggressions undermine trust—and how to interrupt harm in real time.

When Support Feels Unsafe: Trauma, Mistrust, and Breastfeeding Engagement: For many families, lactation support is filtered through past trauma and institutional mistrust. This session examines how trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches can improve engagement and continuation of care.

From Intention to Infrastructure: Building Equity Into Programs and Practice: Equity cannot live only in mission statements. This workshop focuses on translating values into workflows, policies, documentation, and accountability structures that sustain change.
